Business Partners In Education

2012 STAR Awards Banquet

The Business Partners in Education Committee of the St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce began in 1991.  Through the years BPIE has worked closely with the St. Johns County School District to provide more knowledge in the schools of what the business community is doing as well as trying to ensure that the students of St. Johns County are adequately prepared upon graduation to successfully function in the workplace.

Annual STAR Awards Banquet:  The STAR Awards Banquet is the signature event of the BPIE. This banquet honors the top 3%  of the graduating seniors in High School. Each student recognizes an influential teacher and writes a brief summary that is read by the principal.  Parents are also invited.  There is no charge for the students, parents or teachers.

St. Johns County Career Academies: BPIE is working closely with the School Board in support of the new Career Academies in all the high schools. Academies are small learning communities comprised of a cluster of students who have some of the same teachers for at least 3 years, and who share several classes each year.  Many are college-preparatory curriculums with career themes. http://www.stjohns.k12.fl.us/academies/

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Character Counts: This program was started in 1998 under the leadership of a past Northrop Grumman Corp. Human Resources Manager.  It was also through BPIE that the First Coast Technical Institute was reorganized into a charter school.  Career Shadowing and Junior Achievement were BPIE programs focusing on the workplace and teaching students the importance of personal economics.  The longest running BPIE program is the STAR Awards Banquet that honors the top 5% of the county’s graduating seniors.  Each student invites his or her parents plus a teacher who has most influenced the student.  This year marked the 11th year for this program.

High School Academy Showcase: The BPIE helped sponsor the 2nd High School Academy Showcase.  Eighth graders from all the county schools are bused to the Convention Center at World Golf Village to learn about each High School Academy.  The parents are invited to visit that night.

Lifeskills training: BPEI worked with WorkSource on a Lifeskills training program for high school students.  This training was taught in 2005 at St. Johns Technical High School, Gaines, and the Hastings Youth Academy.  BPIE will continue working with WorkSource and the SJC School District to try to get this training in each high school and or junior high school.

Education Summit:  This 2-day event began with Dr. Willard Daggett speaking in the Flagler College auditorium about the changes necessary to meet the needs of all students in the 21st century.  The next day a summit was held at FCTI that focused on the establishment of career academies in the five county high schools.

Education Video: BPIE worked with a class at Flagler College to produce a St. Johns County Education video that highlights the educational opportunities in our county.  Included in the video are St. Johns County School District, First Coast Technical Institute, St. Johns River State College and Flagler College.
