EDC Chairman's Note:

Adapting to Promote Economic Well Being in Today’s Challenging Economy

No matter what you think about the economy there is one thing we can all agree on: Times have changed. In order to survive this shift in our economic environment, businesses need to adapt. Business plans must be scrutinized and reworked and businesses, big and small, (not to mention non-profits and government) must be willing to change.

So what are we doing in the Economic Development Council?

First, we are readjusting our efforts towards business retention, working with existing facilities and the productivity potential within our current infrastructure. We are working with several of our large employers to provide the support and assistance they need to remain in business, here in St. Johns County. The attraction of companies like Rulon, MDI, and the HHGregg Distribution Center, may be thrilling and will always garner more public attention, but as companies adjust their growth plans and the number of relocation and expansion projects diminish, our concentration must be on the retention and expansion of our job base with existing companies.

Secondly, we are moving forward with our Site Readiness Program; a partnership between the Industrial Development Authority, the Airport Authority, the County, and our office to prepare shovel-ready sites. This program will enhance our ability to retain businesses by expediting the expansion process. It will also help us to be better prepared to attract new projects once the economy has recovered.

Additionally, this year we are tracking bills moving through the Florida Senate and House of Representatives that address economic development issues, and are continually developing our relationships with state legislators.

We are continuing to explore and develop new programs that adapt to our current economy. On the horizon, we see opportunities to tap into international markets and broaden the customer base for our current and future businesses. Also, we are exploring programs to stimulate and build upon the cultural and artistic strengths of our community.

As we continue to venture into uncharted waters, be confident that we will remain vigilant, and though adjustments may be made, our goal will always be to promote the economic well being for all St. Johns County citizens.
